This paper analyses recent trends in green and strategic investments and their ability to propel less-developed regions in terms of foreign direct investment attraction to be more competitive and resilient places. In both green and strategic sectors, the opportunities for regions to attract and retain investments are increasingly apparent. Attracting investment in these areas – and ensuring said investments provide benefits to local firms and households – depends on regions’ ability to leverage their attractiveness assets such as their existing skills base, linkages with SMEs, infrastructure and innovation ecosystem. Moreover, national governments play a key role in prioritising and supporting sub-national investment attraction activities, using them as a lever for national competitiveness.
