The Region of Central Macedonia (Greece) is well-positioned to accelerate its transition to a circular economy by harnessing its strong entrepreneurial spirit, policy initiatives in relation to regional development and innovation, and territorial advantages linked to agricultural production and agrobusiness. The region's involvement in EU-funded projects on the circular economy and bio-economy underline its commitment to sustainable business practices. Nevertheless, their implementation has been siloed and timebound. In addition, the region still faces challenges in waste management, with 90% of municipal waste currently landfilled. Efforts to address this include the rollout of bio-waste collection and the implementation of a landfill tax. Going forward, there is significant potential to further develop a sustainable waste management system that reduces waste generation and promotes resource valorisation. Additionally, Central Macedonia’s agricultural tradition offers a unique opportunity to build a circular bio-economy, leveraging its agro-industrial strengths and innovation capacity. This circular economy scan provides ways forward on how to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy through the OECD 3Ps framework: People and firms, Policies, and Places.
