This OECD Emission Scenario Document (ESD) is intended to provide information on the sources, use patterns, and potential release pathways of chemicals used in either fabric finishing or fabric coating. The document presents standard approaches for estimating general facility parameters, environmental releases, and occupational exposures to chemicals used in fabric finishing and fabric coating. Specifically, this document provides separate approaches for chemicals used in fabric finishing and for chemicals used in fabric coating because there are sufficient distinctions to separately estimate environmental releases and occupational exposures to chemicals used in these processes. This ESD should be used to separately estimate general facility parameters, environmental releases, and occupational exposures to fabric finishing chemicals and fabric coating chemicals. The scope of the ESD only applies to chemicals used as finishing agents (e.g., flame retardants, water repellent, stain repellent, softeners, etc.) in fabrics and textiles, as well as chemicals used in textile coating processes. Note that this scope also includes non-finishing agents, which are chemicals used in the finishing process that are not meant to adhere to the final fabric product (e.g., lubricants, sequestrants, surfactants, detergents, mercerising assistants, scouring agents, wetting agents, and carrier phases).
