The OECD Test Guidelines for aquatic toxicity testing need adaptations for the testing of manufactured nanomaterials. A Guidance Document for how to adapt relevant Test Guidelines was published in 2021 (GD 317). The original document did not provide detailed recommendations, and this project aims at filling this gap, based on experience gained in testing selected nanomaterials, to improve robustness of data generated.

Project description
The project aims at complementing the Guidance Document 317 on Aquatic and Sediment Toxicological Testing of Nanomaterials in order to include detailed annexes providing technical recommendations for conducting assays according to TG 201, 202 and 203. The main goal of the proposal is to develop, based on scientific evidence, technical recommendations for conducting assays with manufactured nanomaterials (MNs) according to OECD Test Guidelines (TGs) No. 201 (Freshwater Alga and Cyanobacteria, Growth Inhibition Test), No. 202 (Daphnia sp., Acute Immobilisation Test), and No. 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test). The information provided in the annexes will be complementary to that presented in the Guidance Document (GD) on Aquatic and Sediment Toxicological Testing of Nanomaterials (GD 317). Although GD 317 already considers the application of TGs 201, 202 and 203 to MNs, the objective of the present work is to give a higher level of detail on possible protocols and procedures for the use of the mentioned TGs with metallic and non-metallic MNs. The project is not intended to review the other sections of GD 317.
How to contribute
The draft updated Guidance Document on Sediment and Aquatic Toxicity Testing of Nanomaterials is currently under a commenting round by the Working Party of the National Coordinators of the Test Guidelines Programmes and open for comments from the public at the same time. Interested parties are invited to contact their National Coordinators at least a week before 31 January 2025.
