Innovation in mobile payments has revolutionised how people make payments in stores and online while accelerating access to financial services. It continues to make payments increasingly cashless and invisible while enabling data-driven engagement by customers for mobile payment providers. As a result, mobile payments are more and more linked to other business areas, such as the mobile platform industry and non-payment value-added services markets which can lead some industry participants to entrench market power in adjacent markets.
In June 2025, the OECD will hold a roundtable to discuss the mobile payment services used to purchase physical goods (groceries, clothing, or appliances) or services ( memberships, reservations, tickets) at a merchant’s physical point-of-sale payment terminal, online purchases, and peer-to-peer money transfers. The discussion will also explore the key determinants that affect competition in the sector and assess the competitive landscape by examining opportunities and risks.
