The seminar “Returns and Reintegration following Internal Displacement,” will delve into the complexities of reintegrating internally displaced persons (IDPs), including those displaced by natural disasters. It is the second in the series “Return and Reintegration of Ukrainians: Innovative Approaches to Support the Long Way Home”, which explores the challenges and opportunities associated with return and reintegration, drawing on international experiences. Insights from these discussions will contribute to the Return and Reintegration Policy Review for Ukraine, part of the OECD-Ukraine Country Programme, which seeks to inform Ukraine’s policies using global best practices.
This seminar will explore the balance between promoting integration into new communities and supporting those who wish to return to their original homes. International organizations will discuss some of the main approaches to improve the livelihoods of internally displaced persons in their areas of origin, into new communities, or in third locations. The discussion will address both short- and long-term needs of IDPs which empower them to navigate the uncertainty associated with the decision to return to their places of origin or integration into new communities. It will also address the role of the community and how social cohesion can be fostered between IDPs and host populations, in order to ensure a sustainable recovery process.
Case studies from across the world will highlight the challenges of reintegration in disrupted environments, where infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and social networks may have been severely affected The seminar will be conducted in English. Prior registration is necessary.
