Geopolitical trends and tensions are visible in West Africa and the Sahel: rising terrorist violence and armed groups, political instability marked by military coups and authoritarianism, and geostrategic competition. This situation and the emergence of the Alliance of Sahel States has weakened the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, deepening political fragmentation. These divisions extend beyond security, raising critical questions about governance, economic development, and regional cohesion and its institutions. Development co-operation is being reshaped, underscoring the need for renewed and inclusive dialogue within West Africa and with partners.
Amidst these challenges, transport infrastructure emerges as a unifying force and a pivotal factor for regional stability and integration. Roads and transport networks drive economic activity and act as strategic assets in conflict. Safeguarding the free movement of people and goods through targeted investments in roads and strengthened cross-border co-operation is vital for economic resilience and stability.
This side event will provide an overview of the security situation in West Africa and will examine how regional integration can be strengthened amidst political fragmentation and growing security challenges.
This discussion will feature high level speakers who will assess the security situation and explore pathways to deeper integration despite political fragmentation. With the EEAS, we look forward to an insightful exchange on the future of West African and Sahelian stability, cooperation, and development.
